The EU Battery Regulation

Anchor 1

It's a complex challenge. Circulor has a solution

What is it?

The EU Battery Regulation requires proof of sustainable, responsible, and circular sourcing for batteries to access the European market, and mandates that all batteries have a digital battery passport by February 2027.

Why has this regulation been introduced?

With increasing stringency over time, Europe is building a more sustainable, secure, and circular battery economy with the Battery Regulation, driving competitiveness and setting a global precedent for consumer transparency.

When are the key implementation dates?

Where is the regulation in force?

The regulation applies to all batteries that are manufactured or placed into service in the EU.  However, it sets a global precedent, which will have widespread implications.

The Circulor Battery Passport

Circulor’s Battery Passport enables customers to comply with the regulation, demonstrating requirements like embedded carbon footprint, responsible sourcing, recycled content, and state of health performance.

  • We have the largest network of battery suppliers on our platform: working with 52% of global cell manufacturers (by production volume), we have provided supply chain visibility for 150 million battery cells to date and collected over 2 billion traceability data points.

  • We provide proof of responsible and compliant activity: when combined with data from our Material Traceability and Emissions Tracking modules, Circulor’s Battery Passport provides verifiable proof of material provenance and the production journey along with inherited CO2-e emissions, proof of compliant sourcing requirements, recycled content quotas and collection targets as batteries reach end-of-life.

  • We can help you begin your Battery Passport journey now: even if your internal master data management is still evolving, Circulor allows manual entry of existing data sourced from various departments, with drafts saved as you progress. When you're ready, seamlessly switch to Circulor's API integration.

  • We work with policymakers: the specifics of the EU Battery Regulation will continue to be defined during a secondary legislation phase. As a member of the German federal government’s Battery Pass initiative, and with in-house battery passport product and regulatory expertise, Circulor is embedded in this secondary phase, updating your Battery Passport as regulatory details are defined.
